About Art Matters

Art Matters is North America’s largest student run Fine Arts festival that takes place every year in March. Since 2000, Art Matters hosts exhibitions and events across Montreal creating platforms and opportunities for undergraduate artists studying at the University. Art Matters is looking to build their team to begin work on the 20th anniversary festival.

ONE VIDEOGRAPHER

Eligibility
  • Candidates must be registered undergraduate students at Concordia University, with International Students remaining eligible
  • Candidates must possess experience with or extensive knowledge of the Art Matters Festival
  • Candidates must possess or ensure access to a digital camera and a tripod
  • Candidates must be able to attend all events of the festival in the month of March (e.g. vernissages, workshops, parties)
  • Experience in documenting events is an asset
Compensation and Support
  • The videographer will be compensated with an $600 honorarium
  • The videographer is not provided software or equipment
  • The videographer is offered ongoing communication with the festival’s coordinating team
Description
  • The contract of this position extends from January 2020-April 2020
  • The videographer will be provided a schedule 2-3 weeks in advance that details any dates of events they are required to attend. It is expected that the videographer will stay for 2 hours at each event to document it
  • The videographer will document the artwork or performances showcased at each exhibition happening in March 2020
  • The videographer will send the Outreach Coordinator the edited videos of events within one week of event date

ONE PHOTOGRAPHER

Eligibility
  • Candidates must be registered undergraduate students at Concordia University, with International Students remaining eligible
  • Candidates must possess experience with or extensive knowledge of the Art Matters Festival
  • Candidates must possess or ensure access to a digital camera and a tripod
  • Candidates must be able to attend all events of the festival in the month of March as well as another 2-3 events during the winter semester
  • Experience in photographing events and documenting artwork is an asset
Compensation and Support
  • The Photographer will be compensated with an $600 honorarium
  • The photographer is not provided equipment or software
  • The photographer is offered Cloud storage and ongoing communication with the festival’s coordinating team
Description
  • The contract of this position extends from January 2020-April 2020
  • The photographer will be provided a schedule 2-3 weeks in advance that details any dates of events they are required to attend. It is expected that the photographer will stay for 2 hours at each event to document it
  • The photographer will document the artwork or performances showcased at each exhibition happening in March 2020. The photographer will arrive 1-2 hours before the vernissage in order to do this. Afterwards, the photographer will stay at the vernissage for 2 hours to photograph the event
  • The photographer will send the Outreach Coordinator all the photos of events within one week of the event date

ONE POSTER PAL

Eligibility
  • Candidates must be registered undergraduate students at Concordia University, with International Students remaining eligible
  • Candidates must possess experience with or extensive knowledge of the Art Matters Festival
  • No experience is necessary
Compensation and Support
  • The poster pal is paid a $150 honorarium
  • The poster pal is offered ongoing communication with the festival’s coordinating team
Description
  • The contract of this position extends from January 2020-April 2020
  • The poster pal will assist the Outreach Coordinator in the festival postering campaign
  • The poster pal will share responsibilities to poster both on and off Concordia University campus
  • The poster pal may help with conducting the printing and production of posters through selected printing services
  • The poster pal will follow the postering guidelines outlined by the CSU when postering on campus which includes the stamping of posters prior to their display

ONE FRENCH COPY EDITOR &
ONE ENGLISH COPY EDITOR

Eligibility
  • Candidates must be registered undergraduate students at Concordia University, with International Students remaining eligible
  • Candidates must possess experience with or extensive knowledge of the Art Matters Festival
  • Experience in copy editing is an asset but not necessary
Compensation and Support
  • The French copy editor is paid a $100 honorarium
  • The English copy editor is paid a $200 honorarium
  • The copy editors are not provided office space
  • The copy editors are offered ongoing communication with the festival’s coordinating team
Description
  • The contract of this position extends from January 2020-March 2020
  • The copy editors will review English and French text respectively
  • The copy editors will work on the festival catalogue, in collaboration with the Outreach Coordinator and Graphic Designer
  • The English copy editor will also aid in copy editing additional documents for Art Matters Festival leading up to March 2020
  • The French copy editor will work an approximate total of 10 hours for the duration of their contract, the English copy editor will work approximately 20 hours

THREE TECHNICIANS

Eligibility
  • Candidates must be registered undergraduate students at Concordia University, with International Students remaining eligible
  • Candidates must possess experience with or extensive knowledge of the Art Matters Festival
  • Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of technologies familiar to galleries
  • Candidates must be able to assist with the set-up and take-down of up to 5 events/exhibitions during the festival (March 2020), troubleshoot technical problems in advance through meetings with coordinators and curators, and participate in a training session in January 2020
  • The Exhibitions Facilitator will oversee the technicians and help in directing the installs and takedowns of each exhibition
Compensation and Support
  • Each technician is paid a $400 honorarium
  • The technicians are offered a training session in January 2020 with the Exhibition Facilitator
  • The technicians are offered ongoing communication with the festival’s coordinating team
Description
  • The contract of this position extends from January 2020-April 2020
  • The technicians will assist in set-up and take-down of events and exhibitions
  • The technicians will troubleshoot technical problems
  • The technicians will participate in a training session in January 2020
  • The technicians will remain in contact with the Exhibitions Coordinator throughout the festival
  • The technicians will provide support and knowledge to curators and artists during the install and takedown of exhibitions

ONE VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Eligibility
  • Candidates must be registered undergraduate students at Concordia University, with International Students remaining eligible
  • Candidates must possess experience with or extensive knowledge of the Art Matters Festival
  • Candidates must have strong organizational skills
  • Candidates must be able to provide schedules and maintain frequent communication with the Art Matters volunteer team
  • Experience in coordinating volunteers is an asset but not necessary
Compensation and Support
  • The volunteer coordinator is paid a $500 honorarium
  • The volunteer coordinator is offered ongoing communication with the festival’s coordinating team
Description
  • The contract of this position extends from January 2020-April 2020
  • The volunteer coordinator will assist the Exhibitions Coordinator in the delegation of shifts and tasks to the many volunteers of Art Matters
  • The volunteer coordinator will take primary responsibility for coordinating and organizing volunteer efforts leading up to and during the festival (e.g. making schedules, contacting volunteers, knowing the volunteer needs of each exhibition…)
  • The volunteer coordinator will assist the Outreach Coordinator in further recruitment of volunteers if necessary
  • The volunteer coordinator will compose a 1-2 page post-mortem detailing their work experience following the festival

1. COVER LETTER: approximately one-page outlining interest in respective position, experience and knowledge relevant to the position, and any experience relevant to Art Matters. Please specify your availability on December 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th for an interview in Montreal, or if other arrangements (e.g. Skype) are necessary.

2. CV: a CV outlining work experience, providing link(s) to any websites exemplifying work if relevant

3. PORTFOLIO: (Only for Videographer + Photographer applications) a PDF with links showcasing relevant work (e.g. events you’ve documented)
